The System Puzzle: Key Steps to Selecting an Integrated Cabling System.

Customer Expectations. What are the customer's expectations? The network should run the applications of today and be adaptable enough to run those of tomorrow. To do so, the system must be reliable, manageable, flexible, and able to grow. And customers expect that all of these essential features of functionality and performance be balanced against their budget.

Component Selection. Component selection constitutes another piece of the puzzle as the quality and performance of individual components is important. This piece of the puzzle also requires that you consider component advantages versus end-to-end system performance.

System Integration. Remember that individual component advantages don't necessarily translate into better end-to-end system performance. Component selection is a part of the puzzle that must be solved at the outset, because the installed system should not be a test bed for component integration.

Standards Compliance. Why is standards compliance important? They represent the accepted minimums on which your system is based. But keep in mind that standards lag technology; therefore, you should aim for a system that offers the capability of accommodating emerging and future applications.

Manufacturer's Expertise and Product Line. Together, the manufacturer's expertise and product line are another essential piece that you must fit into the system puzzle. The success of your system depends on making the right choice. And the right choice includes eliminating integration risks posed by multi-vendor installations.

Key Contractor and Vendor Skills. To be successful, the system must be installed by a contractor who possesses skill, knowledge, and integrity. Also, using a bid process to select a contractor gives you more control over cost.

Warranties and Guarantees. The most important point to keep in mind regarding warranties and guarantees is the difficulty of managing varying warranty terms in multi-vendor-component systems. By opting for an end-to-end system and the all-encompassing guarantee that comes with it, you eliminate multi-vendor finger-pointing.

Value. One of the most intricate pieces of the system puzzle is value, which is itself made up of a number of important elements. The value of a system can be expressed as the result of adding functionality, performance, and quality together and dividing by the total cost of owning the system. To compute the total cost of ownership, you must include the cost of acquisition, ongoing maintenance, system capacity, and operational lifespan. All of these costs together add up to the factor that determines the value of your system.

The Belden IBDN Certified System. This is the piece that brings all the other pieces together in a perfectly integrated whole. The key to the puzzle is the Belden IBDN Certified Cabling System. The Belden IBDN Certified System insures that you get all the right pieces to solve the system puzzle, from perfectly integrated components to standards compliance, from quality installation by trained Certified System Vendors to support for future applications. The Belden IBDN Certified System also offers a 25-year extended warranty and a lifetime application assurance program (covering both materials and labor). It is a powerful tool that enables you to put all of the pieces of the system puzzle together for optimal performance and value.

The ABC's of networking
. Today's networks require a cabling infrastructure capable of supporting a variety of telecommunications needs such as voice, data, video imaging, and building control. The most efficient networks are high-performance media systems designed to meet these physical infrastructure needs as well as future ones. Networks may be comprised of high-speed copper cabling and/or optical fiber cabling.

A... Build a solid foundation
To ensure utmost efficiency and reliability in a network, a structured cabling system is required; that is, one in which all the component parts are independent yet perfectly integrated and complementary. A structured cabling system is essential for optimal network performance.

The cable plant is the foundation of the entire network...
It's like building a house. If you scrimp on the foundation,
you put the entire house at risk.

The Gartner Group

A Structured Cabling System ...

  • eliminates the potential risks and uncertainties of piece-part solutions;
  • improves overall reliability and performance;
  • provides the ability to migrate today's disparate networks to easier-to-manage architectures;
  • and enables you to support new applications and maintain your competitive edge.

In addition to these benefits, a structured cabling system provides greater return on investment, as its expected life-cycle can be predicted whereas the longevity of a non-structured system is a matter of complete uncertainty.

It is not unreasonable to expect seven to
twelve years of useful life from the cable plant

The Gartner Group

B... Use modular sub-systems for greater flexibility
Belden network solution is the Belden IBDN Structured Cabling System. Belden IBDN is a structured cabling system that interconnects telecommunications equipment for voice, data, video, and building control in a multi-product, multi-vendor environment. Belden IBDN is made up of modular subsystems that are both independent and complementary. This means that changes in one subsystem do not affect the others and that the various parts of the network continue to work well together. As a result, these two attributes facilitate growth. The Belden IBDN network is laid out in a physical star topology, which enables you to make moves, additions, and changes with virtually no network downtime.

Belden IBDN is a strategic business investment that combines cost-effectiveness, scalability, flexibility, and maximized network performance.

For more information on network design and installation , please contact a Belden IBDN Certified System Vendor or consult our U. S. Sales Rep listing or Canadian Sales Rep Listing

C... Adhering to the Appropriate Industry Standards
Industry standards committees ensure that the guidelines for structured cabling are independent of both the manufacturer and technology and that certain, specific requirements for the proper operation of the cabling system are met.

Standards bodies such as the TIA/EIA (Telecommunications Industry Association and the Electrical Industry Association), created for Commercial Building Cabling, have a main objective. The TIA/EIA standard divides the structured cabling system into several subsystems or components, thus the term "structured". It includes standards for transmission and inter-connect specifications and structured cabling sub-systems.

For more information about Industry Standards, you may consult the Industry links and white papers sections on our web site.
